The hydrogen car [ Return towards  Hydrogen energy  ]

Based on this observation, hydrogen energy constitutes one of the most obvious answers to limiting oil dependence and making our vehicles more environmentally friendly.

The major car manufacturers have developed demonstration fleets with as many as a hundred hydrogen car prototypes.

Some of these cars use hydrogen directly in a traditional engine. The most efficient ones are equipped with an electric engine. Electricity is produced onboard the vehicle by a hydrogen-powered fuel cell. These “zero emission” vehicles only give off water and have already made it possible to greatly reduce, even eliminate CO2 emissions.

The good test performances obtained during with these initial vehicles enable these manufacturers to move on to a second demonstration phase, with quantities that may reach a thousand prototype. The marketing of cars to the general public coul start by 2015.

The hydrogen vehicle market

Today, there are about 800 million automobiles in the world. Supplying only 1% of these vehicles with hydrogen would require the production of 20 billion m3/year of H2. This represents a tremendous growth opportunity for Air Liquide, which currently produces 6.5 billion m3/year of H2 for revenues of €900 M.
