Its applications [ Return towards  Hydrogen  ]

For many years, hydrogen has been used for numerous industrial applications.

Hydrogen’s mainly used is to eliminate the sulfur that is naturally contained in oil, in order to produce clean fuels: this is desulfurization. The hydrogen supplied by Air Liquide supplies to refineries all over the world makes it possible to avoid the release of about 780,000 tons of sulfur oxide a year into the atmosphere, or more than the quantity emitted each year by a country like France (450,000 tons).

Hydrogen is also used to fuel rockets and space launchers like ARIANE V.

It is also used:

  • In chemicals to make textile fibers like nylon, polyurethane foam and plastic material;
  • In the glass industry, to make flat glass;
  • In electronics, as a carrier gas;
  • In metallurgy, for the thermal treatment of steel.
